Rival rallies around Cairo ran into Saturday, with some celebrating an order to jail deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, and others angrily demanding his return to power.
The death toll from
overnight clashes jumped to 75, state news agency MENA reported, citing
medical workers at
an impromptu field hospital.
In addition, more than
1,000 protesters were wounded during clashes with police in Cairo's Nasr
City neighborhood, a stronghold for Morsy supporters. MENA had
previously reported 10 people dead at that location.
The Muslim Brotherhood, which Morsy formerly headed, accused police of opening fire on demonstrators with live ammunition.
A wounded protester
getting medical treatment at a field hospital said he saw men in plain
clothes opening fire on pro-Morsy demonstrators with shotguns, he said.
"Police forces were
standing behind them. Also, military forces were outside blocking three
entrances to Rabaa Adawiya neighborhood," Mohammed Sultan said. He also
reported seeing corpses with gunshot wounds at the hospital.
Gen. Abdel Fattah
al-Sisi, the head of the military, called for mass demonstrations Friday
to support him and the military in ending what he has called
"terrorism." The Brotherhood condemned his statements as "inciting
violence and hatred."
